Although I love sage, I often prefer to burn Mugwort; it has a lighter scent and grows very abundantly here in the mountains. In late summer, I gather armfuls of it and hang it to dry before carefully preparing the smudge bundles.
Like sage, Mugwort can be used to clear negative energy and prepare a space for meditation or ritual. It is also traditionally thought of as a plant of protection and a dream enhancer - burn a little before sleep, or hang a bundle near your bed!
***when burning smudges or other incense, be sure to burn on a glass or ceramic surface, and never leave unattended***
